Full of life, both day and night, Gran Vía is a great location from which to start discovering Madrid’s main attractions. A walking tour will take you to the Golden Triangle of art that encompasses the Prado Museum home to the world’s biggest collection of Spanish and European art; the Queen Sofía Museum where you can view the works of Dalí, Miró and Juan Gris; and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum that gives visitors an overview of art from the 13th-century to the 20th-century. Other highlights include the Plaza Mayor, known in English as the Town Square, in the heart of the city; El Madrid de Los Austrias, the old centre of Madrid that was constructed during the Habsburg Dynasty (1516–1700); the Royal Palace of Madrid, formerly the official residences of the Spanish royal family; and the Buen Retiro Park, a large green space with water features, statues and thousands of trees that, together with Paseo del Prado, became a combined UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021.

  • 24-hour reception, free newspapers in the lobby, dry cleaning, laundry, and concierge services as well as a luggage storage room.
  • Madrid is a diverse city offering cultural, gastronomic and a pulsing nightlife.
  • Madrid was founded in the late ninth century by Muhammad I of Córdoba, the fifth Umayyad emir of Córdoba who headed the first unified state of Al-Andalus. Built as a fortress, its mission was to defend and protect the neighbouring city of Toledo following the Muslim conquest of Spain in the early eighth century.
  • Conquered by the kingdom of Castile at the end of the 11th-century, Madrid was destroyed by the Berber dynasty of the Almoravids in 1109. It was King Philip II who decided to make it his capital in 1561 by transferring his court from Toledo. This new political centre of the Spanish monarchy was chosen at a time when Philip II reigned over an immense colonial empire that stretched from Asia to America. Madrid’s geographical location had the advantage of being in the centre of Spain, and the Puerta del Sol square was built in the heart of the new royal city to serve as the zero-kilometre starting point for all Spanish roads.
  • The city of Madrid is located at an altitude of 657m, making it the second-highest capital in Europe after Andorra la Vella (1,013m). Located on a high plateau, Madrid enjoys a hot, dry and even semi-desert climate for most of the year, with very little rainfall. For three months in winter, frost and snow occur regularly and temperatures can drop below freezing.
  • The booking fee and tourist tax are not included in the price of the tour. You can select the number of nights you wish to stay at the time of booking.
  • To get to the city centre from Madrid-Barajas Airport, you can use the Express Shuttle service “Exprés Aeropuerto” that operates 24/7. The trip takes about 30 minutes and costs 5 euros per person payable on board the bus. When you travel to the airport, a bus operates from the railway station Madrid Atocha between 6:00 am – 11:30 pm and from Cibeles station from 11:30 pm – 6:00 am. Alternatively, you can use a cab, the Cercanias suburban train that leaves from terminal 4 on line C1, or the metro on line 8 that runs continuously from 6:00 am to 1:30 am.
  • For an additional charge, you can choose to have a buffet breakfast from 7:00 am to 10:30 am on weekdays and from 7:30 am to 11:00 am on weekends. The Las Infantas restaurant and La Villa bar offer a good selection of cuisine and drinks.
