  • The modern Hotel Villafranca comfortably accommodates couples and families alike; the breakfast is presented as a buffet
  • Your accommodation is a stone’s throw away from the Rome-Termini (Rome’s largest railway station) and the Castro Pretorio metro station (line B).
  • Legend has it that the city was founded by the twins Romulus and Remus in 753 BC, on the site where they were nursed back to health by a she-wolf, after being thrown into the Tiber River by their mother (of Alba Longa royalty). They were, however, raised by the shepherd Faustulus. The city was given the name “Rome”, which was derived from “Romulus”, after he murdered his brother and ascended to power. The bronze statue of ‘Capitoline Wolf’ celebrates the city’s origins and can be found at the Capitoline Museums (a collection of art and archaeological museums) in the Palazzo dei Conservatori.
  • The Colosseum was built under the Flavian dynasty as a gift to the Roman people. It served multiple purposes including: a display of Roman wealth, power, engineering prowess, an entertainment arena, a political mouthpiece to boost patriotism and a diversion from pressing social matters.
  • Rome was not always part of the Italian Kingdom. Prior to the unification of Italy in 1870, it had belonged to the Papal State (States of the Church) which was under the direct rule of the Pope (752-1870). In celebration of the fall of the Papal States and the unification of Italy, Rome was declared the capital of the Kingdom (previously Florence). Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, believed that the city’s strategic position and immortal memories would prevent it from being seized by another power.
