Positioned as a luxury destination, the United Arab Emirates is made up of seven federated emirates since 1971: Abu Dhabi (the capital), Ajman (the smallest), Sharjah (with the most enclaves), Dubai (the most populous), Fujairah (the only one overlooking the Gulf of Oman exclusively), Ras Al Khaimah (the least urbanised) and Umm Al Quwain (with the fewest inhabitants). Its vast oil and gas reserves have enabled it to become one of the richest countries on the planet. This state settled in the Arabian Peninsula forms a predominantly desert territory that stands out for its modernism, extravagant projects and conservatism.
