Mali is based on ancient empires and various kingdoms that spanned a vast territory between North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. In medieval times, its resources accounted for more than half of the world's gold. Located on the trans-Saharan trade route and camel caravans, Mali had one of the world's largest universities in Timbuktu. This flat and arid Sahelian country has faced an unstable security situation in recent years. Its picturesque villages, its wild nature, its traditional customs and cultures are nonetheless a mine of change.
