Due to its geographical isolation, the archipelago of Madagascar stands out for the high level of endemism of its fauna and flora (up to 80% of the species). The island remained uninhabited by man for a long time until the arrival of the first settlers from Borneo 2,300 years ago. Land of chameleons, lemurs and baobabs, Madagascar is a sanctuary of wild nature. The mixed culture, customs and traditions of the inhabitants are as much due to the Asian as to the African origins of Malagasy society.
