Bordering Venezuela, Brazil and Suriname, Guyana is the only Commonwealth state (formerly British Guiana) in South America. The tropical environment of this small country (750,000 inhabitants) consists of coastal plains along the Atlantic Ocean, virgin forests, tabular mountains (Guiana Shield) and high savannahs. Its still preserved landscapes evoke Arthur Conan Doyle's novel "The Lost World" and remain one of the last lands of adventure in the Amazon.
