Ecuador has the distinction of having the highest official capital in the world (Quito at 2,800 metres). Its highest point (the Chimborazo volcano at 6,263 metres) is said to be the highest peak on the planet because it is the furthest from the centre of the Earth. Ecuador also boasts the first World Heritage Site (the Galapagos Islands in 1978) and the highest density of wildlife species. This small Andean country, located on the equinox, borders the Pacific coast, the Andes and the Amazon. It is rich in diversity in terms of ethnicity, culture, landscape and biodiversity.
